I applied for the position of Control Team Manager for WPD as I wanted to be part of the best performing DNO within the industry.
As Control Team Manager, I am responsible for the Operations Support side of the Control room. This includes Outage Planning and Operational Liaison, HV & EHV Reporting and IIS submissions, Development and application of sequence switching schemes, Network Security and the Control Room Support team.
The people and the work.
It’s all about getting the job done right the first time in a firm but fair manner.
Someone who fits in with the culture and shares the same values and work ethics.
I started on a YTS training scheme in 1986 and then transferred to an apprentice for Controls and Instrumentation with Midlands Electricity. I moved across to an area team as a Primary Fitter in 1990. My interest in becoming an engineer grew as I became more experienced and qualified and I was fortunate to complete my ONC and HNC which were sponsored by the business as I entered an engineering development program where I achieved 132kV SAP authorisation.
Starting on a YTS and ending up as a Control Team Manager seeing all parts of the business along the way.
I personally completed an MBA whilst carrying out my fulltime job as a Shift Manager with a young family.
Go for it and don’t look back. There are so many opportunities and types of role within the business.
