Meet Cameron

Read Cameron's interview to see what she thinks about working with us at Western Power Distribution.

The opportunity to take up a job that suits me, as well as working for a company that has lots of progression opportunities. A friend of mine had already worked for Western Power and had told me that it would be a great company to apply for.

The main aim of the scheme is to gain knowledge and experience from other Engineers, Planners and Craft Staff so the tasks I undertake are extremely varied. I can be High Voltage switching in Birmingham City Centre one day and then changing poles in the countryside the next.

Every week is different; you get to work in loads of interesting locations from Birmingham City Centre to picturesque countryside, completing a wide variety of tasks. Also the feeling of satisfaction you get when a customer praises the hard work you have put in to get a job completed, or the lights back on after a power cut.

At Western Power it is really easy to get along with your colleagues; everyone is friendly and genuinely want to help you progress. Safety is paramount and we are one big team all working towards the same goal.

Having a good attitude and the willingness to learn, as well as taking a genuine interest in the tasks that you are required to take part in for their role. Also someone who is self-motivated does well at Western Power.

The Trainee Engineer scheme is set up really well to help make a future Engineer, almost every element of the business is covered during the training scheme with a variety of placements and training courses. Each stage of the scheme involves gaining different authorizations

Getting onto the trainee engineer scheme as it’s a great opportunity.

The biggest challenge for me was completing the required HNC qualification in electrical engineering, parts of the course were tough but through managing my time at work and being able to study around completing tasks through the scheme I now have a HNC in Electrical Engineering!

I couldn’t recommend Western Power enough, there is lots of opportunity for progression and it’s a career for life.
